The Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) is a union of workers at Alphabet, Google, and their contractors and vendors. AWU is a local of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), chartered as Local 9009. AWU was founded in January 2021 and is an open-membership union, meaning any worker at Alphabet or its subsidiaries and contractors can join — you do not need a majority vote to join.
AWU organizes to improve working conditions, advocate for ethical uses of technology, and build worker power across the Alphabet ecosystem.
AWU launched publicly on January 4, 2021. It is affiliated with CWA, one of the largest telecommunications and tech unions in North America. AWU's open-membership model is different from many traditional unions that require winning a formal NLRB election before forming — any worker can join AWU and participate.
AWU is open to all workers at Alphabet companies and subsidiaries, including full-time employees (FTEs), temporary workers, vendors, and contractors (TVCs). To join, visit go.awu.fyi/join.
