Under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act, you have the right to:
- Join or organize a union
- Bargain collectively through representatives of your choosing
- Act in concert with coworkers for mutual aid and protection ("concerted activity")
- Discuss wages, working conditions, and union activity with coworkers
These protections apply whether or not your workplace has a formal union contract.
It is illegal for your employer to:
- Fire, discipline, or threaten you for union activity
- Spy on your organizing activities
- Promise benefits or make threats to discourage organizing
- Interfere with, restrain, or coerce you in exercising Section 7 rights
If you believe your employer has retaliated against you, you can file an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charge with the NLRB at nlrb.gov.
As a member of AWU-CWA Local 9009, you also have the right to:
- Vote in union elections and on contract ratification
- Run for union office (subject to bylaws)
- Attend and participate in union meetings
- Review the union's financial records (LM-2 filing at go.awu.fyi/lm-2)
